In trying to find the truth we have searched what publications of the day were saying, and have found that before the Indonesian occupation that even the New York Times and its readers were quite vocal supporters of West Papua. Sadly, after Sukarno blackmailed JFK with the treat of becoming a communist State if the US did not aid Indonesian colonial ambitions, the newspapers became mostly silent.
