1962 Pro-Indonesia group inside White House

Briefing notes on "pro-Indonesia group at the White House"

The question is, could these three men central in the US Department of State records have been subverted by US corporate interests (such as Mobil & Chevron discovery of Ertsberg, Rockefeller's Freeport Sulphur 1959 decision to mine Ertsberg, Bechtel's deigning & building of Freeport mines courtesy of centralised Javanese military control of West Papua; courtesy of Ford Foundation plans since 1949 for centralised Javanese military) to recruit US government support of covert corporate goals at the expense of US and global interests? Specifically were these men helping Bechtel and Rockefeller's Freeport Sulphur companies to gain Indonesian military colonial access to West Papua's gold and copper? - and why was the CIA Director unable or unwilling to inform Kennedy about the world's richest gold and copper deposits being in West Papua?
  - today how could we know how-much gold Freeport McMoRan has really extracted from West Papua? or what covert uses a such gold could have been used for?

  - not least of which was Bundy and Dulles likely briefing on "covert side to the Marshall Plan", which in combination with David Ransom's 1974 chapter "Ford Country: Building an Elite for Indonesia" highlights their potential to enable a covert plan to create a Colonial Indonesian military State to harvest mineral resources of South East Asia for select US corporations using the Marshal Plan as cover.

Robert Komer in March 1966 declared that he was "no expert in Southeast Asia" (*); yet in 1962 the State Department records "Komer, who had became so pro-Indonesia as to become the butt of jokes among the White House staff about being Sukarno's personal representative". If Kennedy had known about the US corporate discovery of West Papua's Gold and Copper kept secret since 1936; he would have known to ask Komer which Americans were requesting support of Indonesia's colonization of Dutch New Guinea / West Papua.
Robert William Komer was born in Chicago, grew up in St. Louis and graduated from Harvard University, where he also received a master's degree in business administration. During World War II, he served as a first lieutenant in Army intelligence in Europe and was awarded the Bronze Star. He joined the fledgling CIA in 1947 and was later assigned to the National Security Council. His abilities impressed top officials in the Johnson White House, who began using him as an all-around trouble-shooter. An Army and CIA veteran who was one of the principal U.S. officials sent to Saigon in the 1960s to try to make a success of the nation's commitment to the war in Vietnam, died yesterday (April 9, 2000) at Arlington Hospital after a stroke. He lived in Arlington. Mr. Komer--known as "Blowtorch Bob"--was sent to Saigon in 1967 by President Lyndon B. Johnson to run the pacification program, described as the battle for the hearts and minds of the Vietnamese people.
"I can't blame Dutch for doubting that Indos have any intention of allowing genuine plebiscite five years or so from now. But the important thing is that some such Indo promise is the essential face-saving device Dutch have been seeking. We must get them to take it asbest they can expect.

1962 Pro-Indonesia group outside White House

Notes concerning some pro-Indonesian interests outside Whitehouse
  • John Rockefeller II:
As an executive of Standard Oil interests, would have been well aware of Ertsberg in 1936 a few years before Pearl Harbor and Japan's displacement of Dutch oil companies from the East Indies. When the New York Times in March 1959 revealed the Dutch colony were now searching for the mountain river source of gold along West New Guinea's southern coast; he would have required a supposedly third party company to claim the mineral deposit before the Dutch found it. With a relative small share holding and a son-in-law on the Freeport Sulphur board, Rockefeller could get this company to act quickly without involving the Rockefeller name after which there would be a window of a few years during which to buy a majority shareholding of Freeport Sulphur before it announced the nature or extent of the deposits.
Unfortunately for the family young Michael Rockefeller found reports of the region's native cultures and people of personal interest; his accidential boating death brought international attention to West New Guinea's central southern coast. Then before Freeport began talks for a Indonesian license to mine West Papua's vast mineral wealth, John Rockefeller died.
  • Freeport Sulphur:
Freeport may have be unaware of Jean Dozy's full report from 1936, but its own Wilson expedition by July 1960 had confirmed West New Guinea's gold, silver, copper, and iron. Freeport's only hope to mine West New Guinea lay with Indonesia succeeding with its colonial claim to the territory.
During 1962 former Secretary of the Treasury George Humphrey was sent to Indonesia to survey US corporate interests while still emboiled in a nickel stockpiling scandle; government contracts for nickel above market pricing had been awarded to M.A. Hanna Company (125 million pounds for $108m), and Freeport Sulphur (271 million pounds for $200m); which neither Eisenhower nor Kennedy could break. Although Mr Hills president of Freeport Sulphur in June 1962 stated "no nickel and very little cobalt was sold to the government under the contract", the company's preference for West New Guinea to become an Indonesian possession could have recieved undue favor.
(See bottom of page 45 and top of page 46 of the 1961 Netherlands Report to the United Nations regarding the Freeport exploration license and onging Mines Office search for the gold deposit)
  • Sukarno:
was a self-proclaimed nationalist who during the 1930s speculated that by working with a Japanese war against the US and other "Imperial Western powers of the Pacific" that he could gain control of the East Indies in Asia. From 1945 he demanded world recognition of his claim to the territories from Sumatra in Asia to West New Guinea in the Pacific; agreeing in 1949 to be one of the sixteen island members of the "United States of Indonesia" created by the Unted Nations, he instead spent 1950 crushing the United States of Indonesia government and proclaiming himself sovereign of the sixteen island nations as part of his Republic.
From 1950 to 1962 Indonesian attempted insurgency and finally military attacks against West New Guinea failed, primalry due to West Papuan people reporting the intrusions to Papuan authorities and sometimes due to civilian success at disarming the Indonesian troops.
Although Indonesia's success came inside the U.S. White House, Sukarno's threats since 1950 to nationalize Dutch and other foreign properties unless he obtained West New Guinea had little success during the first eleven years. Newer threats to adopt communism seem almost comedic when one weighs the entrepreneur enterprises of all of his Generals and that his military even today relies principly on its private enterprise income.
  • General Suharto:
  • Ford Foundation:
Thanks to the efforts of David Ransom to access Ford Foundation records we know the Foundation had actively began training members of the Javanese elite at American Universities immediately after the war and that in 1949 Soedjatmoko and Sumitro told US businessmen in New York and Washington that if the East Indies were under Javanese administration that America and the Marshal Plan could expect "easy access" to the wealth of Asia.
  • Bechtel:
The world's largest engineering corporation, with a unhealthy relationship with several CIA Diretors, it services he needs of many US oil and mining companies as well as foreign customers, and is today head of the "US Indonesia Society" lobby group.
