Sadly, on this their celebration of independence, the people of West Papua stand alone.
Aside from one comment piece published on The Guardian?s website yesterday
(fittingly titled, "A forgotten cause"),
not a single major British or American newspaper has reported on West Papua today.
The decision not to cover the story must have been a conscious one,
because the AFP sent a wire covering West Papuan celebrations in eastern Indonesia earlier today.
The parliament of Vanatu paid respect to the 45th West Papuan Independence Day
by way of a 1-minute silence this morning.

Vanuatu parliament (Ph 678 22229) confirms radio report that PM and Speaker of the House
requested members to stand in one minutes silence for West Papua and
hundreds of thousands of people who have died in the quest for the colony of
West Papua to re-gain its indepenndence.
